The Thomas Jefferson Fellowship Program (TJSP) offers an excellent chance for Tunisian students to undergo a year of non-degree research in the USA. This program is designed for full-time students enrolled in recognized universities or institutes in Tunisia and allows them to study for one academic year at a U.S. college or university.

The TJSP’s mission is to promote revenue generation, democratic progress, and stability in Tunisia via a variety of educational programs, internships, and leadership development opportunities. By building a network of skilled young individuals, the program empowers them to drive meaningful change within their professional sectors and local communities.
Program Structure and Activities:
- Students must attend a full academic year of coursework in the U.S. and participate in an online leadership training module.
- During the first semester, participants are required to contribute at least 20 hours of community service in their U.S. host community.
- In the second semester, students undertake a part-time professional internship, gaining valuable workplace experience.
Funding for the Thomas Jefferson Scholarship:
The TJSP is able to operate thanks to the kind donations of American citizens via the U.S. Department of State and facilitated by IREX. Participant selection is merit-based and open to all who meet the eligibility requirements.

Eligibility Criteria:
The TJSP is committed to a fair selection process and does not discriminate based on color, religion, gender, age, nationality, disability, or any protected characteristic under U.S. law. Alumni come from all 24 governorates of Tunisia, contributing to a diverse community. To be eligible to participate in the program, you must meet the following criteria:
- Hold Tunisian citizenship and reside in Tunisia;
- Be enrolled as full-time undergraduates in good academic standing at a recognized university or institute in Tunisia;
- Be in at least their second year of undergraduate studies at the time of application, as first-year and final-year students are ineligible;
- Architecture students may apply in their second through fifth years, while engineering students may apply in their second (preparatory class) through fourth years.
- Be eligible for a U.S. J-1 visa;
- Age 18 or older by the first of July 2025;
- Agree to return to Tunisia for a two-year period upon completing the program, as per the J-1 visa requirements;
- Achieve an average score of /100 on the Duolingo English Evaluation Test (DET);
- Complete the academic year before the study program with a passing average.
Selection Process:
The TJSP operates a merit-based selection process. Applications are evaluated by a panel based on several key criteria:
- Academic performance;
- Commitment to Tunisia’s development;
- Demonstrated leadership qualities and community involvement;
- Proficiency in English (both written and spoken);
- Adaptability and openness to the exchange experience.
Application Requirements:
All applications must be completed and submitted online, with each question answered in English, unless otherwise specified. Applicants are required to provide two references, completed by individuals who can attest to their qualifications for the scholarship. These references could be from professors, advisors, mentors, or managers.
A complete application package, including all reference forms, must be submitted as instructed by 5 p.m. Tunis time on Wednesday, December 4, 2024. Only fully completed applications, with all required materials, will be forwarded to the selection committee for review.
